Cancun family vacation ideas
Cancun is one of the most popular sun destinations for families from Quebec and Canada, thanks to direct flights, turquoise water and plenty of all-inclusive resorts. But the region has much more to offer than the pool. Here is how to plan a family trip that suits kids of every age.
Where to stay
- The Hotel Zone: a long strip of beachfront resorts between the lagoon and the sea. Convenient, with lots of services. Some beaches face open water and can have stronger waves.
- Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya: about an hour south, with a more relaxed atmosphere and many family resorts. Often a good base for day trips.
- Calm-water beaches: if you have young children, look for a resort on a beach known for calmer water, often on the north-facing side of the Hotel Zone or in sheltered bays.
When choosing a resort, check for a kids' club, a shallow pool or splash area, family rooms and the distance between the room and the beach.
Beach and water activities
- Snorkelling: many spots along the coast are suitable for beginners with life jackets. Kids who swim comfortably can see fish just a few metres from shore.
- Isla Mujeres: a short ferry ride from Cancun, with calm beaches and a relaxed pace, popular for a family day trip.
- Cenotes: natural freshwater sinkholes, clear and refreshing. Some are easy to access with stairs and platforms, which is better with young kids. Life jackets are usually available or required.
Culture and nature
- Mayan sites: Tulum, on the coast, is compact and memorable; Chichén Itzá is a longer day trip. Go early to avoid the heat and crowds, and bring water and hats.
- Theme and eco parks: the region has several large parks combining nature, swimming and shows. They are paid and can be pricey, but very popular with families; compare options before booking.
When to go
The dry season, roughly from December to April, is the most popular, and it lines up well with the Quebec winter and spring break. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. Sargassum seaweed can also affect some beaches, often in spring and summer, but it varies a lot from year to year: check recent reports before booking and ask your resort how they manage it.
Health and safety tips
- Drink only bottled or treated water, including for brushing teeth with young children.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and UV shirts: the sun is very strong.
- Respect the beach flags and swim only where it is allowed, under supervision.
- Bring a small first-aid kit with your usual medications.
- Check entry requirements and travel advice for Mexico before you leave, and make sure everyone's passport is valid.
- Consider travel and medical insurance for the whole family.
Packing for kids
- Several swimsuits, so one can dry.
- Water shoes for rocky areas and cenotes.
- Hats, sunglasses, UV shirts.
- A light sweater for air-conditioned spaces and the plane.
- Snacks and activities for the flight.
Keeping the pace relaxed
With kids, alternate active days and pool days. One excursion every two days is often plenty. Schedule outings early in the morning and keep the early afternoon for rest in the shade.
